baking branches for cage furniture...

starmom Oct 23, 2003 07:37 PM

I have a nice piece of driftwood that I bought for my beardies, but I also had it outside all summer in the reptarium, I brought it in and noticed some small black bugs on it....

it currently in my oven on 170 degrees, im monitoring it, any suggestions of if this is hot enough to kill any potential bugs?

I know that ive read on these forums that people bake their driftwood, branches etc....
thanks
sue and my numerous critter collection

there was a post a couple days ago about this. i can't remember who posted it but from what i remember, they soaked it in a water/bleach solution and then baked it. but it was also mentioned that you could also do just one or the other. they were just taking extra precaution

I first soak the wood in a 10% bleach solution for 30 mintues - or longer if you have the time. Then I cook it in a 250 degree oven for at least an hour - longer if it's a thick or big piece of wood.

just put it in the oven for 20 minutes at 300f, just make sure to put some foil or a pan down because if there is bugs they will try to flea and they will make a mess if there isn't a pan/foil to catch them.
