WOOHOO Got my Import baby from Cheri today.

Mattman Oct 23, 2003 07:46 PM

She arrived at about 9 AM this morning from a long flight from Florida to Ohio, then a drive into New Jersey. This little girl traveled more in her short life then I will in my entire life. She came all the way from Germany so a short trip to NJ was nothing. She is such a vibrant full of life dragon. This is the first time I had a dragon bounce out of her deli and say where's the FOOD!! She heated up a bit and went right for the greens/pellets and did very well on her crickets. The best I've seen a dragon do after shipping. She basically seems settled in already. Basking on her cave, and enjoying the food. Cheri must have put tons of time, and love into these dragons cause this dragon is the tamest, sweetest dragons that I've gotten yet. Cheri what do you do to get them ready for shipment? She seemed so relaxed and not stressed at all. I named the little sweetheart Meg. I don't know just fits her perfectly. In time Meg will lend her unrelated blood, and genes to provide some strong healthy babies for years too come. OK enough of the blabbering.. Sorry I'm a bit excited.. Here she is. Hope you like.
Meg out of the box and already looking for food

Meg after drinking her Gatorade. Boy she made a mess and dripped all over me, lol. Here she is hanging out.

1 More for now

and watch their weigth closely and eating to make sure they are not stressing and accepting it as normal. So many pet shop babies don't make it mainly due to change and stress. These guys are use to different enclosures (they have inside and outside ones, 2 different eating ones and a free roam play area with their jungle gym. They are handled a lot in just moving them around so they are also use to people

The day before they are to ship out they get a nice soak, a day in the sunshine or heat lights, a light dinner of dusted crickets and heat in their inside enclosure, then put to bed a little early. The day they are to leave, they get up early the around 6 am, have their salad then they are separated from the others around 10 AM and go into a holding tank. They are offered diluted gatorade and water several times with a eye dropper (they all are use to an eyedropper) this flushes out their tummies. Around 4-5 they get another nice soak and drink, then warmed up again in the enclosure. At 6PM we leave for the airport, the baby gets to watch whats going on around during the ride and they seem very curious, at 6:20 they are fussed over by the counter staff at Airborne and then they go into their deli cups and box, taped down for the trip and off they go, I go home and cry

We try to arrrange it so they are tired and ready for bed at 6:30 PM tummies have fluids but no solid so they are not hungry, but well hydrated for the flight. So far all the babies have bounce right into their normal eating and habits routine the day they arrive and we think they probably sleep during the whole trip, never knowing they traveled so many miles overnight.

This gal was harder as she came left of 90's F degree temps and went into 30's F degree temps, I was a bit worried about that. HArd to balance they travel temp so they don't overheat before they are out of Florida or freeze when they arrive in the north.

I am so happy she arrived okay and seems to be her normal self and that she is with you and thanks for the pictures!

Awwwww, she is such a little cutie!

Do you realize that I have actually met this little girl? I was in Daytona, Florida when the German dragons arrived and I gave them some water. So say hi to her from me and ask if she remembers me?

Looking forward to more pics of her!
/Gunilla
Ps. Can I add her to "Teo's Friends" too? (I can copy those pics if you don’t mind)

PPs. Teo waves hi!

Yes, Cheri told me all about them. She told me you where there for the show, and actually got to see and help hydrate them after their long trips into the country. Thank you. Sure you can use these, and the others I sent to you for teo's friends picture page. Talk to you later, and I'll give her a pet on the head from you

Yes, I helped to hydrate them. The poor guys were SO thirsty! And so cute! Babies are the best.

And oh - Teo says she welcomes Meg among her friends.
(I will add your dragons this weekend!)

I'm sure I'll be posting more pics as she grows up into an adult. I just really thrilled to have her. This is as close as I'll ever get to a wild dragon. As close as it gets really. Glad you enjoyed the pics.

velcro Oct 24, 2003 07:49 AM

You would not believe this, but I think I have this little girl's twin brother!!! I swear that my Velcro looks just like her. Right down to the orange at the ears and the black on the back of the neck.

How old is yours?

Mattman Oct 24, 2003 09:57 AM

Meg came from Germany towards the end of August as a hatchling, I believe her first or second week of life. I would say she is about 2 months old now. She's 1 out of 15 that made it here from Germany, and Cheri S has placed them all with homes. Most are going to breeders to help strengthen bloodlines in the USA that have been weekend over time due to many reasons. She's as close as it comes to a wild specimen. Her parents where from Australia, and are now in Germany for educational purposes. So if Meg is related to Velcro it was a long, long, long time ago in a foreign land LOL Meg is one of a few that Cheri was able, and very lucky to have received. She had to do lots of hard work over the years to get them. So to Cheri, and everyone who has received one of these dragons, they are so very special to us, and to the future as well.

Yes, i agree with you....if they are related it is way down in the blood line. I, unfortunately, didn't know about this site before I bought our little Velcro from a pet store. I have learned alot since and know that we would have definetely gone to a breeder...but then we wouldn't have Velcro....

Mattman Oct 24, 2003 10:14 AM

My first Dragon was from a pet store as well. Amber was bought from a pet store, and looked kinda like Meg did as a baby. I most likely would have purchased from a breeder as well if I knew any at the time, but Amber is great too. I love the pitch black pattern on Meg. With all my colored dragons their patterns fade out so much. The contrast on these normal colored dragons are just outstanding, and quite different then my others. I love my Amber girl just as much as my other 9, yes I got a bit addicted She started my love, and caring for this species. These are just the best species of reptile I ever had the joy of caring for. They are by far number 1 on my list.

remarked on about these babies... LOL I call them my dirt babies. The strangest thing, is the one that is the closest to a black/white baby I have ever seen and the larger of them is the one no one has selected yet!!

It was the third largest and has more of a line pattern coming off the spines than block or lines down it, going on 3 months old and over 100 grams! Axe calls him skelator cause of his pattern

CheriS Oct 24, 2003 02:33 PM

getting it to thrive good, there are a few others on here that also bought pet store babies and did well, its not the norm as they do stress out a lot, but then ones that do make it are probably stronger to begin with.

Sadly all my experieces with pet store bearded dragons is not good. Ones we bought early on and ones they have contacted me about to try and save, we have only been able to return a few in good condition and that was after a lot of hand feeding and medications.

Both we tried to buy from a store looked good at the time, but ended up with diseases common in bearded dragons and we lost both early. I don't think it is my husbandry as they are the only ones we have ever lost.

Due to that, I am a big advocate that bearded dragons should not be sold through pet stores, if anyone buys one and comes here shortly after we always encourage them to get them to a vet ASAP and have them checked for parasites, worms and protozoans.

Congrats on your baby, sounds like it was a hearty one to begin with and must have received excellent care from you.
