Bed A Beast?

cod6545 Oct 23, 2003 08:30 PM

Hey- the guy at the pet store said Bed A Beast would be a great substrate for Darts, and it's excellent for growing plants. It's very inexpensive and comes in a big block you soak in water to make it expand. Anybody use this? Does it really work? Thanks. Brooks

Don't do it! It'll stick all over the frog and won't look very colorful. Buy the terrarium moss or live moss, it work's much better.

correct me if i am wrong, but BED A BEAST is just compressed coconut fiber, right? if so, i use a similar product called ECO EARTH in all my tanks and it seems to be working great. the plants like it, it doesn't break down nearly as fast as peat based mixes or other jungle mixes, and looks good in my opinion. i do add leaf litter and moss patches over... this looks real nice. it can stick to the frogs, but so can any soil or even little bits of moss... just keep it moist (which it should be anyways for the frogs) and it should be fine. plus you get a lot of it per each brick, so you can use it for a lot of tanks.

I use it in my auratus tank and am now top-dressing the other tanks with it as the soil sinks and decomposes. It works great, but does tend to get kicked or carried into the waterways and water dishes a bit more than the soil mixes.

I have used it in my tanks and i found that it works great with the plants, but if you want it to look really good put some moss and leaf litter over it.
