Info on glass cutters? any pros out there?

joseph1 Oct 23, 2003 09:22 PM

I'm trying to decide what type of glass cutter to buy. The options seem to be a large strip cutter, or a nice handheld with oil feed. I have a cheap glass cutter from homedepot that I used to make my current vivarium, but don't think it would work for larger pieces of glass.

So does anyone on kingsnake make thier own Vivariums and could advice me on what I need to make a larger vivarium?

Hey, I make stained glass windows sometimes. I don't know what a "strip cutter" is, but I use a cutter with an oil reservoir and a carbide steel roller. I don't usually cut glass thicker than an 1/8", but I would think that 1/4" glass qwould pose no problem with a good cutter and straight cuts. If you are going to invest in making a nice glass tank, I would invest in a nice cutter. Toyo is probably the best brand out there. You can get one for about 20 bucks. Do a search for stained glass supplies and you will have no trouble finding one.

Thanks, I think that's basically what I'm going to do. I still need to figure out how to make a straight cut on a long piece of glass. Surely there is some tried and proven method for holding some sort of straight edge on the glass. Know of any?

Not a bad idea, thanks. Now I just need to find a straight edge long enough to tape down and order my cutter. Finally found a descent glass supplier in town.
