ratio of crickets to Rep Cal pellets

deetu Oct 23, 2003 09:52 PM

Merlin is eating about 30-40 1/4" crickets two times a day. (our pet store doesn't sell medium crickets and the large are too large for him yet) We finally got him to eat the RepCal pellets. He will eat around 2 dozen in a sitting. How many crickets does that equal? Should we still give him all the crickets he can eat? Or should I cut down on the crickets so he will eat more pellets? I'm hoping to get him onto pellets and stop the crickets.

So far, unfortunately, he will only take the pellets on a hand feeding basis so it is tough to get them in him in the mornings.

I can't tell you how many pellets equals how many crix, but I can tell you that the pellets contain as much if not more protien than crix by dry weight. If it is eating the pellets regularly without fuss, I would cut the crix back to once every other day and see how it goes.

Feed him as many pellets as he will eat, but still as many crickets as he wants. Once he starts eating from the bowl, you can get rid of the crickets. Perhaps put your hand in the bowl and that might help. One of mine used to eat from tongs. So first I held the tongs in the bowl, and then I would just leave them sitting in the bowl. After a few days he ate without that.

I have been trying to do that but he won't take the pellets near the bowl. I think he associates the pellets as coming out of the branch. Humm...maybe if I move the branch.

Thank you for your answers.
