Orange foot gecko???????

jeanne Oct 24, 2003 08:36 AM

Hi everyone. Has anyone here seen a Leopard Gecko with orange on their feet? I know someone who has a jungle female with orange on her foot. He is going to be breeding her to a Tremper jungle albino that he is getting from me. Ok. I know nothing about genetics, so my question is, will the orange in her feet be passed on to her babies? Could he possibly evetually get a gecko with completely orange feet or am I just dreaming?

Thanks for your help!

No, I tink it is impossible for that to occur in your gecko. On some slight chance you may get a gecko that could have orange feet from the gene. I doubt it will occur with in the geckos lifetime.

If you have a trait to work with and improve/increase, and good stock to pair it with, eventually, with selective breeding and some luck, anything is possible. Do you have a pic?

Here is the picture. You can see the little orange on her back foot. Have you ever seen any gecko with any orange on their feet? I know it isn't a lot of orange, but I figured it would be worth a shot. Let me know what you think.

Thanks again

It would tak a lot of very selective breeding and a lot of luck. Geckos can have patches of orange anywhere on their body. I see orange like that as almost like a birthmark. My deformed resue gecko Twink has a big patch of carrot on his top right shoulder. Very random. I suspect that the tency to throw patches like that could be genetic, but I have my doubts it is localized to certain spots. So even if you did replicate that trait, the next patc mught not be on the feet. I see it more like those dark "paradox" patches...the tendency to produce them is genetic I think, but the location is relatively random.

Even without the orange on the foot/feet, that is a well marked VERY nice jungle! Beautiful bold markings, and c-l-e-a-n!
Wow - impressive.

It most likely isn't triggered by a recessive gene, but you could probably achieve that goal with selective breeding. After breeding her, incubated the eggs to be male. (you'll have to get rid of the ones you don't want and keep the others seperate) Choose the baby with the orangest feet and breed it back to the mother. After a few generations, you should see the color intensity increase (provided you are breeding only the best of the offspring) and the percentage of individules displaying the trait should increase.

It's a lot of work, but hey you may develop the first "Tang Foot" leos.

Good Luck

Thanks, I wish it was my project, but the gecko doesn't belong to me
She belongs to someone that is bying one of my geckos. He plans to breed my male Tremper Jungle Albino to her. He sent me the picture of her and I saw the orange and figured I would ask for him.

Thanks

That is a really handsome leo! The pattern is so symetrical & the orange foot is really cute!
