How long until a jungle carpet is tamed?

4runner Oct 24, 2003 01:01 PM

Hi, I just got a new juvenile jungle carpet python. It nipped me a couple of times when I inspected it prior to purchasing, and I knew based on research that several more bites were in store for me. After letting it settle in its new enclosure for a few days, I have started handling it again. I'm being very gentle with it, allowing it to crawl freely between hands, and letting it bite me if it wants.

Carpets are awesome snakes and I'm wondering how long it will take to tame down with regular handling. I love handling and showing off my snakes, and am hoping that my new acquisition won't be an exception. Can I get anyone to share their experiences with taming jungle carpets? In particular how long did it take? Any tips on handling would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

Hatchlings on average, with consistant handling can tame up withing a week or two. It just depends on the individual. One piece of advice that many keepers give is to 'over stimutate' the sensitive areas (like the head and tail) of you hatchling so that they get use to being touched and not harmed.

Best of luck!

I'm glad to say that I think my carpet is starting to get used to handling. It was my first session today without getting bit. Thanks for the advice, I didn't think I would see progress this quickly.
