Bulk frozen mice/rats worth it?

ngiovas Oct 24, 2003 07:56 PM

I'm considering purchasing a pack (or two) of frozen rodents for my snakes because they are so expensive locally. I'm wondering if its worth it for only two snakes. I have a BP that is nine months old and I am getting a 5 month old Brazilian Rainbow Boa next week.

The local pet shop charges $1.35 for a medium mouse and prices go up from there. I'm wondering if it is worth paying the shipping and ordering some. The other thing I am wondering about is how long they will last, and is it worth buying 50 rats or mice while my snakes are small if they will out grow them before they are all gone.

Any opinions?

Nick

Check www.rodentpro.com
They have an on-line quote system that lets you pick and choose rodents, quantity, and sizes and get a quote including shipping. Calculate your expected needs and do the math to see if you'll save. My first order of 200 misc. sized rats (avg. cost including shipping was $.94/ea) is due next Thursday so I can't personally give inputs on the quality. I didn't notice "vacuum packed" in their descriptions, so I might be pretty busy next week vacuum sealing them for long term storage and easier thawing. Check them out.

I think the answer rides on one thing: Shipping. In the cases of smaller orders, your shipping is going to run more than the order itself. If you check the sites for the suppliers, you'll find shelf life info. Some of that depends on the packaging method used. Vaccuum packed I think last a lot longer than just bagged up rodents. You have a good point about size, too. You could probably take that into account by buying a mix of sizes.

Of course, if you have too many rodents to feed out to your snakes, you've now got a great excuse to get a few more snakes. :D
