Hi new here!, local newts and salamanders...

Hedgehoglover May 29, 2003 11:22 AM

Hi I'm new here and I just had some questions about keeping wild-caught local species of newts and salamanders. The newts I'm thinking of are red efts or red spotted newts, Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens. They are aall over the pond and the efts run all over the woods. I would be primarily interested in keepingg them while they're in their terrestrial phase. I am also interested in the spotted salamander, Ambystoma maculatum, which I have seen hanging out around our woodpile. I kept one of these in and old aquarium on our deck for a few days last fall. He was giant! I have kept the newts indoors for periods of several weeks before. I was just woudering how these species tend to do in captivity.

Both species do great in captivity. Here is a great caresheet on the Red Spotten Newts. http://www.caudata.org/caudatecentral/caresheets/n_viridescens.html
I've never kept the yellow spots personally so I am not sure on their care. But I think it isn't much different from Tiger salamanders.
