sexing??

mike d Oct 25, 2003 05:42 AM

well i got two leos yesterday but i am unsure of the sex. they were in a cage together and the guy at the store said that they were either a pair or both female. but i havent been able to tell. i know with all the othr lizards i have had that you can put them in the palm of your hand a lift up there tail and if it is a male then you will see two bulges off to the sides. but can this be done with leos? both of thier under sides look the same. also if you could post a pic of the under side of your males and females that would be helpfull.

Males have two bulges right behind the anus. Also, some say the males have larger heads.
Do you have any pics of them?

no i do not have any pics at this time(i just gt hem yesterday). but if they were males then they would be fighting right? they sleep in the same hide and hey re always around each other. i checked this morning and i didnt see any big bulges and i did not see any femoral pores(i dont know if youc an tell by pores or not)

well my leos were bought as high yellow and let me tell you they have alot of yellow. but one is almost all yellow with no spots at all and some bright orange on her tail and two slight orange arks on her back. while the other one has a decent amount of yellow but has more spots and lacks the orange on her back and on the tail. could one be a different morph than the other?? i will try and get pics soon.

also what is a good ratio of males and females to have in a breeding colony? i have a 75 and a 30 gallon tank so i figure i can fit quite a few in both.

Hey there. Those are some nice big enclosures you've got. Generally they say to have 10 gallons per gecko, though if you have ones that are smaller they may get out-competed for food and you'll have to move them. Make sure you don't house any males together. They'll fight to the death.

As far as sexing, first of all, the geckos have to be old enough (some people say you can tell at 1 month with a 10x magnifying glass, others say 3 months, and still others say you can't accurately tell until 1 year.) If you flip them over, on males you can see a V-shaped line of pre-anal pores just above the tail. At the bottom is a link you can go to to see what male and female geckos look like.
