Thinking about an iguana

spyro Oct 25, 2003 10:07 AM

Hi, I just got 2 water dragons a couple months, ago, never thought I would like lizard but I'm defanatly in love with them. So much so they have taken over my whole rm as when I purchased them I never realized how much room they would need and I felt cruel having them in a 25 gal aquarium., now thye have free roam. My boy freind says if these guys pan out I can have another lizard for my b-day in january. I'm thinking about an iguana, but they would have to live peacefully in my room with my 2 waterdragons Do you think in a whole room they would get along or would it be taking a risk? (I am building an enclosure its going to be 5feet long 2.5 feet deep and 6 feet high) would this be big enough for an iguana and for how long? How long does and iguana grow for and how long do most pet iggys live? thanks pamie, spyro and draco

lol I hate to reply to my own message. but I forgot soemthing. It seems they can be pretty aggresive, if they are handled frequently does this become less so? and if I fell asleep in my bed could I wake up with an iguana attached to my nose ifhe was on free roam? and they do sleep at night right, I mean once my waterdragons close their eyes at night nothing can wake them up.

Your iguana would grow considerably larger than water dragons, and the water dragons would probably not be happy with something so large in the same room. Igs grow upwards of 5 to 6 feet long full grown, and can weigh as much as 15 to 18lbs. They can live up to 20 years. The enclosure you describe might do for your ig for the first year or two, but then you'd need something quite a bit larger.

Head over to iguanaden.org and anapsid.org and do some reading, you'll learn plenty about iguanas there. They are a big commitment, they get large, and they live a long time. Consider adopting one as well, there are many unwanted igs needing good homes.

Your water dragons and an iguana should not live together, so kudos for researching and finding out beforehand. Also the cage would not hold an adult iguana. =)

If my enclosre woulnd't be big enough I probly shouln't get one, I love my little water dragons and dont want them stressed out. Guess I will just get another water dragon. Thought mabey a beardie since they dont need such a high enclosure but I dont really like hte looks, I think iggy's and water dragons have the right kind of "lizardy" look. I will defanatly research before I ever get any kind of pet again, I didn't even know how big my little 10 inch dragons where going to get when I got them, or how expensive to get set up at first. People like me should not be allowed to buy lizards, pet stores should make sure you have the right stuff or shouln't sell to you. They do back ground info on someone getting a cat! Crazy.
