I think that most people will agree that samearing the stuff on silicone is not really a good way of puting stuff on the foam. What i did in my imitators tank was to mix 1 or 2 parts concrete primer stuff, 2 parts ground coconut bedding, and 2 parts milled peat. Then spread this on with your hands or what ever. It works really good and looks nice too.

you can also use weldbond to miz with water and wtever it is you want to apply... it dries transparent... as fro the proportions you ahve to figure out what works best for you... you can also do a search in this forum and read about how others have used it
To make you even more confused, I have another method. I used the concrete primer/adhesive method first. After that dries(takes at least a week), you will have cracks in it. I filled these cracks with brown silicon and pressed coco into that. Looks great.
Also, like you, I used black jungle's method(the one you are using with the smeared silicon on dow foam), and had bad luck with it. After I brushed the excess coco off, you could see the silicon peeking out all over it...looked sorta shiny...not naturalistic at all. I recommend the concrete adhesive or weld-bond method.
