Tegu Diet Question...

LizardLuva Oct 25, 2003 06:02 PM

i was thinking of getting a tegu. But my little brother keeps rats and i would feel uncomfortable feeding rodents to a lizard. I was wondering if i could feed a tegu on mainly crickets and large insects(hissing roaches)? Any other substitutions? I was thinking of getting a smaller species of tegu, (mayb the blue argentinan is one of the better from what i have read) Thanks!

i'm no expert but i think that would be ok. you could also throw in some ground turkey or sdz diet.

I think that would be fine. You could use Zupreem Monitor and Tegu diet which is "supposed" to have the nutritional value of a mouse ina can, offer a variety of foods including fruits, and use a vitamin and calcium supplement everyday. I'm no expert, but I think that would work.

You can feed only insectes when there small. I have a Argentin Blk&wht male that is 4' 1/2" Tl- Snt to vent is 20 3/8",2years 4ounths old, And wieghs 16-17lbs. I also have a blue female ,She is 3'1 3/4" long, 2years old, and wiehgs 5-6lbs . Santiago (my male Blk &wht ) gets fed every 5 days. On one meal, he gets 2 Juvinal size rats(50-100 grams), The nexit meal he gets 3-4 kiwiis. He eats a little king mealworms in between. My blue female gets king mealworms and mice mainly ,with a little fruit in between. Tegus get at least 3'( Agentines to 59"- 4' 11" . Chilian Dwarf tegus get 2'. Good luck Russ
