This is the mom laughing with you.. I TOLD him he was going to get LOL'd for posting this about a milksnake the same way he did the king snake! When we checked for a reply and I read yours, I cracked up and he gave the embarassed roll-of-the-eyes look; then playfully hit me for replying like this.. LOL He meant to post in the milksnake forum, but woops!

As it stands, we're still researching on which snake to get. I'm not sure a kingsnake is his best bet as a first; I was thinking more along the lines of a corn snake, but he's trying to convince me otherwise. Right now we have 2 RES turtles and we've been down other roads with other critters. He also wants poison dart frogs, so he's going to have to choose which one.

We'll keep lurking and asking questions every once in a while... he's having a blast reading the forums!

Thanks,
The Mom half

I just want to commend you, Mom, for being unafraid of reptiles and critters that make some mom's shudder. He's a lucky boy to be able to even consider owning a snake, dart frogs, or whatever. Someday you will have a very grateful young man who will thank you.

Just for the record, I wasn't laughing AT him. I know how hard it is to decide. I really reccomend going to a show. Then you can base your desicion on individual animals that you can see in real life and handle to get an idea of temperament. Make sure to ask tons of questions (ie. last feed, live, fresh killed or thawed, last shed, DOB, ask about the parents, ask about past offspring, etc...) if only to find out how much the seller knows and what kind of records they keep. If they get annoyed with you and act like you are wasting their time, they are wasting YOUR time.

It's really impossible to generalize by species. Although, if you want my biased view, get a brooks king. In my experience, these are super mellow even as babies. Whereas most king and milk babies will musk on you as babies. They almost all calm down though. After a while with a musking animal you'll understand why people say they'd rather get bitten then musked on.
