Do I need more light in my cage?

Jack31081 Oct 25, 2003 07:09 PM

Haven't posted in a while (which I interpret as "everything's going fine for my veiled and me", but I have a question to pose.

I have a self-built cage that's 4' wide, 3' deep, and 5' tall. I currently have 3 hanging plants, 3 potted plants, and branches to provide basking and transit between plants. There are also some artificial vines that I've used to make a little hiding spot in the back where he likes to sleep. With all the vegetation, it's pretty dense, and not much light gets past the hanging plants. I'm using a PowerSun 100W MV bulb along with another UV strip light to provide even UV coverage across the whole cage.

There is enough in the way of heat and UV for him, but should I be providing more light, because it tends to be dark in the areas of the cage that the basking lamp doesn's directly shine on (again, because of the density of plantlife).

Thanks for any help.

what part does your cham spend most of it's time in? If you find that he/she isn't going to the darker places much then you might want to get more lights. If he/she seems to utilize most of the cage I wouldn't worry about it.

if he can get out of the heat to cool down while he is above the plants then he wont go below them. but if he does go below them you can get a blue light (or dayglo)and put it below the plants shining down to the bottom or across the cage .
