first hatchling and a few questions

fcwegnm0 Oct 25, 2003 08:42 PM

I incubate at 80 degees F. and this eggs was laid 8/15... and hatched 10/23.... making for 70 days of incubation. The baby has no problems at all, nice and healthy. What's up with that?

I expected her to be little but damn! I saved a bunch of mealworms in the fridge but they're bigger than the little girl. Sooo I need a cheep place to buy small crickets. Any suggestions?

When should she start feeding? I picked out 10 or so small mealworms from my breeding bin (I use them for my adult leos) but either she doesn't know to look in the food dish (it's twice as tall as her) or they don't eat right away. So when do they start to take food?

Any other tips/suggestions are welcome... thanks... dave

it can take anywhere from a couple of days to a week. Try dropping little mealies in front of her if you can't get crickets. I started all my hatchlings this year on mealies and just dropped them in front of them and they went right after them.
Another option would be a dish with clear sides so she can see that there is something inside.

congratulations! got more eggs cooking??

Yea, I have another egg cooking. Of the 6 eggs my female she gave me 2 were good. One from the first clutch, one from the second and the third clutch doesn't look like its doing so good.

Thanks for the reply, I was starting to get worried. This is my first time breeding. I was getting ready to throw this eggs out. It started to turn brown/black, cave in, and just not look good. And I'd been waiting 70 days. I'm glad I was too busy to get around to it! I can't till next year.... or till my ball python gets breeding size.. I can't imaging waking up to her coiled around 8 or 10 eggs.. then all those babies...

Well thanks for the reply... dave
