i have a under-the-tank-heater for a ten g and a heat lamp. i have one of those temp control things so that it doesnt get too hot...but i was wondering if i need the heat lamp. i have the zoo med uth thingy for a 10 g, i just dont know about it. would it produce enough air heat for the tank? also, it seems like it gets pretty hot, and all i have for substrate is a layer of paper towels. would it get too hot to walk on if i let it go full blast? any suggestions? thanks

the under the tank heater is plenty for the gecko unless it gets extremely cold in your house.

I asked my vet about the UTH that I have, and he said that it's good, but I should still have a heat lamp on at least part of the day to provide ambient heat. He said that even if my apartment stays fairly warm, he still recommends the light heat source. As long as you pay attention to your thermometers, it shouldn't get too hot in there. He also suggested that I cover up half of the screen top with a book or something to keep some of the warm air in the tank.

Also, you said you're worried the UTH will be too hot on the floor w/ only paper towel as substrate. I use paper towel, too. I just double or triple layer it over the UTH to reach the temp I want. Keep laying your thermometer on it & layer paper towels until it's the temp you want.
