Just how thick does acrylic need to be...

joseph1 Oct 25, 2003 10:15 PM

I'm thinking of dimensions roughly 4'x 2'x 2' for the viv. 3/16 seems to be much cheaper than 1/4in. Basically I'd be saving over $40 if I use 3/16, but would it be thick enough?

Still need to call and make a price comparison on glass.

Glass is way more expensive unless you have a hook up for cheap.
I know "kritter cages" are about 1/8" glass so unless you planned on using it for an aquarium one day because water pressure is very heavy....But the thicker the sturdier..

For a tank that size you could always make it out of plywood and have an acrylic front, would be much cheaper and stronger. Then just cover the plywood with some type of background material.

Definantly not thick enough if it is going to be designed to hold water, even 1/4" for a 4 ft. tank may be tough. It can work if you build a frame around the bonded edges that will hold it together and a base frame that will lock the 4 sides to the bottom. At that size thinner acrylic will likely warp easily unless it is supported very well. I have used a router bit to groove a wood base and then fit the same size acrylic sheet into the groove, which I use for turtle tables, but I don't use it to hold water.

3/16" is waaaaaaay to thin.... I used a sheet as a cover for my 4' terarium and it warped in a day... even 1/4" maybe too think for that size tank, plus you have to remember the thicker it is tthe larger the surface area on the edges for it to bond... but if you are planning on building a frame 1/4" might work...

now I know why fishy tanks cost so darn much. I'm not planning on filling it with water, just an inch or two. I was planning on having it support the hood and lighting, perhaps I should rethink that plan and build a frame.

Plywood designs are nice but I was hoping to use it as a livingroom center piece where it could be easily viewed from all angles. But due to the rising cost of supplies, maybe I'll rethink that too.

Thanks
