Traveling with kingsnake

FLihs May 29, 2003 12:55 PM

I am about to move across country, AZ-> OH, and I am obviously taking my snake with me. She is the same one that I ask about yesterday for not eating. Since the route we are taking will take about 6 days to drive does anyone have any suggestions on how best to transport her? Thanks

Keep her in a secure, ventilated container of some sort. The most important thing is to make sure she is comfortable and not too hot or cold (don't leave her in a parked car in the sun!). Offer her water every day and give her some aspen bedding or something to bury into. She'll easily be fine for 6 days without food.

I kind of have the same question.
I will going to the daytona show and its about an 8 hour drive for me where I am at. What would be the best way to bring snakes back from such a long trip? I already have bought some transport cages for that that are well ventilated. I am worried about the stops like if we stop to eat somewhere or rest stops if they get too hot. i will be hopefully picking them up from a private breeder if they produce what I am looking for after I leave a deposit for them.

thanks,
john

When traveling with a snake, it is best not to feed it before the trip, the stress can cause it to regurge. It stinks really bad in a car. Best way to get your snakes home from a show is right in the cup they came in. When stopping, if you have to leave the car, I would suggest getting a snake bag, made from muslin cloth generally, or a light cotton pillow case. Put the cups right in the bag and take them with you. Temps can climb to lethal levels in a car within just a few minutes, I wouldn't try to leave them.

As mentioned, something for the snake to burrow in will help it feel more secure.

So its better to leave them in the deli cups they come in at shows? what about water? its like an 8 hour road trip or lobger from ga to daytona. i have 3 reptile transports thing. one holds 2 snakes with a divider in it. do they give them water at the shows and when you do make pit stops would it be better for them to be in thin pillow case in the delicups or would it be better to simply put them in the reptile transports and not use the deli cups or the pillow cases. i would take them out of the vehicle i seen too many dogs suffering while their owners are in stores and i dont see how they do their animals like that.

john
