hidebox question

rowad Oct 26, 2003 07:55 AM

can some of you explain to me how you all have your hideboxes set up? I am a bit confused about how you can stuff a rubbermaid box with moist substrate, cut a hole (where exactly?) and what, turn it upside down? Doesn't te substrate come out? Some sites say use a cover...I'm like, so lost....
I have been giving them moist sub. throughout the cage and want to start using it within a certain portion of the cage...

Thanks for any help

>>i use a rubbermaid

what kind;how large?
do you have any photos?
are your tegus full grown?

>>just so i can take the lid off and get my guys out but i cut a hole on the smaller side

what smaller side...do I sound retarded?

>>and pack in the substrate then i put a rock on the lid and i put a hole in the lid and use one of those dripper things and let the water drip in their and i have a 75 watt night light

so the lid is on the top...and utilized...like I said if you or anyone else has a photo please either email me or upload here...much appreciated.

Thanks

I used a morter mixing trray and just cut a hole in the side . The humidity was 65-70% in this hide box. Im now using a 4'-2'-2' cage as there burrow it works great . Ground humidity is 75-85%. And the air humidity is 60-70%. Thanks Russ

Hi Rowad I have a Rubbermaid hide box. It's about 1 3/4ths foot wide by 3 1/2 foot long. It's the shallow kind that's only about 6" tall. I fill it most of the way full put the lid on and cover the thing with substrate so it's dark in there. There's an entrance hole cut into the long side of the Rubbermaid right by the corner (of the Rubbermaid) that's up against the cage wall.

made in the side with a hammer for Rufus. Go to the Pro Exotics site for a little video clip. It's really simple and I've gone back to cypress mulch because it holds moisture better. When it looks like he is about to shed I dump the water out of his water dish under and around his hide. This is what works for me and I think it brings out the natural Tegu curiosity and behavior.

when Rufus gets bigger I might try the mortar tray idea. In the past I have tried the rubbermaid/plastic shoebox idea with snakes. Never could get them interested in them. Since I began using plant saucers both snakes and lizards take right to them and make them home. Rufus makes a bowl shaped indention under the hide and closes the door with substrate and seems totally content.
