Question on year old turtles not eating

kulkat Oct 26, 2003 08:34 AM

This is a question for my neighbor, which I do not know the answer. She has 2 young Box Turtles. One just turned a year in September, I think the other is approx. 1 1/2 years old. The one year old was one of my hatchlings that I gave to her. She had her aquarium in her sunroom, heated only by the UV light and the natural sun that came in. When the cold set in, the tank was still out in the room, and she mentioned that her turtles were not eating. I told her to bring the tank inside, because I know that my turtles were eating, and also the other babies that got passed around to my friends were all ravenous. This was about 1-2 weeks ago, and they are still not eating. In fact, the one I gave her, keeps on flipping over now. Mine flips over too, but its to get attention if I walk by and don't have food in my hand lol! So what else should she do. I just realized when I was writing this that she definately needs a heat light, right? I'm ready to call her now. Anyway, any other suggestions? She has tried reptomin, worms, slugs, what else? She usually gets silkworms from me, but, mine all turned into cocoons right now so thats out! Giving her some hornworms later to see if that works. Let me know, sorry this is so long, but, I'm at a loss!

I think you are absolutely right about heat and lighting. Have her warm the tank up a bit and add UV lighting. Then these turtles should eat, but it may take a day or two once everything is heated up.

Best wishes,

She should have a water heater and should be set on 80 degrees. Use a thermometer to monitor temp. Basking light is needed besides a UVB light. Keep trying the wiggly foods to temp them. Also she needs to be sure they are getting 12-14 hours of light per day. Very important! This should get them eating in a few days unless they are ill. Then a vet trip is in order.

Given that hornworms, tobacco & tomato, partake of plants that would be considered dangerous themselves (leaves) to turtles, any concerns on feeding the caterpillars to turtles?
