Croc skink eggs!

iwana Oct 26, 2003 09:21 AM

Hi everyone!

Noticed the post below on hatching croc skinks and thought I'd share my news, too.

We have had a pair of crocodile skinks since last April (they are both wild-caught adults) that we hoped would breed, which they seemingly did because we found an egg in the terrarium a few months ago. Because we had read that these lizards tend to brood their eggs, we had decided to leave the egg in there and let the lizards do their thing.

Well, a few weeks ago while doing some routine maintenance, we decided to look in on the skinks, and noticed that the female was *very* fat and looked as if she was going to lay another egg. The first egg was still there and seemingly in good condition, although the soil around it had gotten dry, so we kind of lost hope on that one but went ahead and left it in there anyway.

Yesterday, again while doing some cleaning, we discovered a second egg layed next to the first one! This new egg appeared somewhat collapsed and because the soil was still somewhat dry in the area, it seemed evident that the female lizard wasn't really brooding the egg the way we thought she would (the article we had read stated that they actually urinate on the eggs to keep them moist), so we removed both eggs and placed them in some moist vermiculite. Curiosity got the best of me and I decided to touch the other egg and it actually seemed viable, i.e. the shape of the egg immediately resumed when gently pressing on it.

This morning, we checked the egg container and the second egg was covered in mold, so we discarded it. But the first egg is still okay. Here is a pic of the egg (sorry, the pic is a bit dark):

Given how long it's been in the terrarium, we're expecting it to hatch very soon! Hopefully, the embryo didn't die because of being exposed to dry conditions -- the outside of the egg actually has little lines and creases in it, almost like alligator skin, but otherwise looks well-rounded. It also looks blackened but that's because of the soil it was originally in.

Anyway, that's our egg story. LOL Wish us luck!! :-D
