siberian dwarf hamsters?

IcedGoddess Oct 26, 2003 09:30 AM

This is an odd question, maybe I just watch too much animal planet

Last night they were showing some animal dad's and stuff on Weird Nature, and one was the siberian dwarf hamster. They showed how the dad plays midwife, cleans the babies and all that...so he can get some action as soon as the babies are all born. I was wondering if these guys are as nutricious as mice? They sure were cute, and if they'd be good for the snakes, I may get my daughter a pair or two and then I can have the babies. I haven't started the mice colony up yet, but these seem to be maybe a little nicer to have around the house

Anyone ever fed them to a corn?

There is a debate in the python/boa forums about hamsters. Some say there hard to digest because of the hair and there not as nutritous. Some people swear by them.If you can kill 2 birds with one stone,pet/food supply i say go for it...Paul.

they ave hair yes..and so do mice and rats?.wat's the debate?........

nutrition?..they are more fatty if they are adult hamsters....not really different if you use young hamsters I think....

I use them all te time..as well as roborovski's,chinese hamsters......and peromyscus mice.......yes regular mice and rats too).......

......russians....some of my balls love them...they didn't eat much for months..and slam a russian.......

........corns can get addicted to them..and won't change back to mice.....not usualy....but a few out of a hundred will eat them soley once you start.......

never even heard of them...I'll have to look up some info on them, are they canibals? I know a lot of hamsters are, my mice and rats never were, and I'd hate to breed some and then have the hamsters eat them before the snakes can.

what do you use as set ups for your colonies? I've been looking at breeder tubs and stuff, but they don't look very escape proof for mice.

sorry took so long........

chinese..ratlike....mouselike hamsters........

hamsteriffic.com?.....try that or keyword hamsters......

I use 5 gallon bucket with a pair in each..breed months like everything else,,,then kill and restart......

I use little glass water bottle with glass tube and rubber stopper....like under $2 here.......

......I feed lab chow.....whole corn.....and dog food..and potatoe everyday.........

they get treats all the time....carrot....romaine....spinach.....bugs......you may even feed them a mouse pink at times.but you will need to cut it or they may just nurse it and keep it alive..(all mothers are different).......

they come in brown with whiteis belly...or ones with white up around the chest and neck area.....some alot more...heard the name "snowflake " used already.....

good luck......

I've handled a lot of dwarf hampsters and mice. I've been bit by alot more hampsters than mice. They seem be more prone to bite than mice. You may want to take that into consideration if they will also be a pet for your daughter, depending on her age. I've certainly handled nice ones but on the biting scale, the mice seem to do it a lot less. Hope this helps.

I can't believe I forgot about that. I've had hamsters and mice and rats, the rat bit me, the hamsters almost always bit me at least once, and the mice never did. I wasn't sure what the dwarf hamsters were like as pets yet, but now that you mention biting...i'll stick with mice. thanks
