Is it A.Frontacincta or A.Prasina?

wynter Oct 26, 2003 09:54 AM

Good day everyone. I'm looking to clarify certain questions regarding these beautiful snakes. Hope you pros out here could help. Appreciate it!

1) Is it Prasina or Frontacincta, when you refer to the Green Burmese Vine Snake? I read an article from the California Academy of Sciences talking about Frontacincta using the pix of a Prasina... Which is correct? I'm confused.
2) What is the life span of the Vine Snake?
3) Is the venom potent to humans? Has anyone been tagged before?
4) How do you tell the difference between male and female?
5) Can I put a pair together, the whole year around?

The reason for the barrage of questions is because someone offered me a pair recently and I'm just trying to get as much info as possible before commiting. Unfortunately, detailed info is hard to come by regarding these snakes. Really appreciate the help. Ta!

its fronticincta btw and it does refer to the burmese vine snake a diff species from a.prasina. Vine snakes generally have similar looks hence the probable confusion. They are colubrids and their venom can be regarded as harmless to humans but its a whole diff story if u're allergic to it..i heard a story bout someone getting tagged in the neck by a prasina and died cause he was allergic to its venom...otherwise they're quite harmless. The worst would probably be localised swelling.
and yes u can keep them together. Just supply climbing space, green plants, frequent mistings and they'll be fine.
Monitoring their feeding might be a slight problem though.

Is that A. fronticincta in your hand?!! Can you post a better pic of the head? I found some literature refering to them as River vine snakes. Do you know why is it called so?

no its a prasina. I haven't heard bout fronticinctas being callled river vine snakes b4. but its probably because they're commonly found on overhanging branches by the waters edge..i know prasina's are. they love moisture.
i don't have a good close up pic because my cam doesn't have auto close up function.
heres one i have in my photo gallery.ive posted it up before
