I have two baby RES turtles and I have a couple questions. One is i've noticed this morning that on the front of the shell of one slider, I noticed some stuff...kind of looks like it's shedding. Is this normal? The shell is still hard, been checking that. My other question is that they never seem to get up on the rock for basking. I have about 8" or so of water, with some rocks on one end, a piece of slate on the top sticking out of the water for them to bask on. I've been told I should have a) a infrared light and b) a basking light for them. which is it? I've had an infrared light on 24/7 because it's fairly cold in the house. Please help. Thanks.

I just noticed now on the other RES in the tank it's got some white silly string type stuff coming out of its tail. Any ideas? Please help!

If it is sort of a celaphane looking chip coming off the shell that is normal. He is shedding his scutes.

Do you have a heater in the tank? If so you can get a mercury vapor bulb and ceramic fixture and use that for his basking area. It provides heat and UVA UVB lighting all in one. Just turn it off at night and if the air temp is too cold the turtle will retreat into the heated water for the night. In the a.m put it back on and he will come up to bask in the warm air and light. Doesn't matter how cold you house is at night if you have water that heated in the tank that's all he needs to sleep in.
