Found Toad With Missing Back Legs

flpelicana Oct 26, 2003 11:10 AM

Hi,
Yesterday I found a toad that was sitting in a puddle of it's own blood, and his back legs were gone. There were footprints that belonged to either a cat or racoon or something. He was still alive, so I put him in a box with some mulch and put him on the screened-in patio where he would be safer.
He is still alive today, but I am worried that he is probably suffering. I don't know if I should try to feed him and help keep him alive, or should I humanely euthanize him in some way?
All he has had is some water that I sprayed on him a couple times...
I looked up what kind of toad he is, and it looks like he is a Southern Toad.
Any suggestions of what I should do to save the poor fella or not?

Any help would be Greatly Appreciated! Thanks!

Unfortunately, it sounds like he might be suffering... If you decide to euthanize him/her, then I would suggest folding it in a small towel and placing it in the freezer for a couple of hours. Hope this helps. Randy

I had a toad that was missing much of his back legs (from the knees down) for about 5 years when I was young. I found him much in the same way you describe. They are though little critters. I doubt very much that he is "suffering". The will to survive is pretty strong in them. I haven't seen one "give up" yet, and I've rehabed literally hundreds of these little beasties. The question is, How much of a commitment are you willing make?

How to get your wife to like toads; 1.Get a male toad. 2.Get him to hug your wifes wrist (amplexus). 3. Tickle him so he chirps in protest. 4.Say "Awww, he likes you". Note; Make sure he pees first or you may receive bodily harm during this procedure.
