Houston area anyone?

CrittersMailToo Oct 26, 2003 01:07 PM

Hi Everyone,
We're (son and I) thinking of delving into the adventure of dart frogs, and have done lots of research on it so far, but I'm still hesitant to dive in just yet. I've raised other animals, aquatic and some reptiles, but this seems a bit more involved and I want to be sure we can do the proper setup before undertaking the responsibility.

Hoping maybe to find other Houston area people into it as a support system... if you're out there, say hi!

Hi there!

There are only a few of us who have made ourselves known - it seems that most dart owners live waaaaay up north, like outside of Texas. I'm a newbie myself, but what I learned came mostly from this forum. And it is a GREAT forum! There are a couple of things you need to know right off the bat. Number one: read as many posts as you can possibly stand. Odds are, most of your questions have already been answered. Number two: don't EVEN think of mixing species in a single tank. Hybrid darts are a huge no-no.

Other than that, I think that you and your son will find these little frogs absolutely fascinating. Have you decided how to house them yet? It's going to be so much fun!

Best of luck and keep us updated -

... and thank you for responding.

And just a note, right off the bat, you're giving different advice (and emphatically.. lol) than I've heard elsewhere. Keeping different species together is what I'm referring to. I've seen people on other sites talk about breeding like this, but I guess it's a matter of preference, keeping in mind, of course, the different habits of the species. (I think there are 3 general groupings as to how the different species rear their offspring.)

As far as other sites, there are a few, but the best one (IMO) is more of a mailing list, and that's accessible by going to www.frognet.org.

I don't have much time to post right now, but I will definitely be back later!

I think I meant to say that you don't want to put different types of tincs together and come up with a hybrid, although he might be the most beautiful creature in the world. Now, if you'd like to put a herd of leucs with your azeurus, that would be just dandy. Have ya'll decided what kind of frogs you're going to get yet? How are you going to setup you habitat? My hubby and I have been all over Houston looking for stuff to work with and we can give you some pointers.

This is sooooo exciting and sooooo addicting! Check my link:

There are two albums - one with the babies, one with a HUGE vivarium (150 gallon).

best of luck -

I know there's gotta be bunches of us based on the number of people crowding Cindy's (Vivarium Concepts) table at the Houston shows.

I'm on the north side too and have been participating in this insanity, for about year now. If you haven't read other's comments, "This is an addictive hobby." Welcome and good luck.

Do they post elsewhere, Darrell, if at all? Are there any local gatherings that us newbies might not be aware of? It sure would be nice to meet folks who have worked with darts for a while and be able to pickle some brains, trade tads, swap flies, etc.

You are so right - it is an addictive hobby!

Kristi,
Not that I've been able to find. I'm usually "lurking" here but don't comment often. If you every want to compare notes give a shout.
