Feeding Superworms to Tokays

LovelyLeopards Oct 26, 2003 07:25 PM

I've had my two tokays for about two weeks now and they're eating crickets and seem well acclimated. I have them housed in a 260 gallon tall reptarium. I ran out of crickets yesterday and have decided to stop ordering them for the winter. I breed leopard geckos predominantly so they live off mealworms, some superworms, and the occasional pinky or waxworm. Here's the problem - my tokays rarely if ever come down to the floor of the reptarium, and I'm aware that this is normal. Problem is - how do I swap them over to eating superworms out of a dish if they don't come down to the bottom? Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

They should come down if they see food. Thats what they do in the wild anyway. Make sure to put the worms in a cup though so they dont burrow. Also, since they climb walls, you can put a cup higher up and tape it or somehow mount it to the wall of your tank higher up if you wish.

I've had real trouble using mealies and supers with Tokays. I've tried numerous times to keep them in diff types of bowls and the tokays always sit above them and watch but never eat them. Even tried long periods of time without giving them nothing else. Only luck I have with only a couple of them eating them is to drop them directly on the substate. Good luck and let us know if youre successful.

My Tokay female doesnt' touch the ground. Never. But if she can see a cricket walking on a leaf on the ground or running directly on the substratum, she jumps over it and seems don't matter of touching substratum. After taking the cricket, she comes on a wood piece and back home quietly. However, if she can, she loves climbing on the rocks or over the wood to go everywhere without touching the ground. She use my 'wood-highway' to do so. Very nice to see her moving like a monkey...

can you post a pic of your enclosure. Also, post the wood hide away, please.

In fact my TOKAY will not eat unless I handfeed her. You can throw crickets or whatever in there until the cows come home-she won't touch them.

But my tokay has stooped to a new low-she only eats handfed, and she doesn't like the heads and will refuse food until I cut off their heads.

But at least I know how much she ate. Mine loves superworms (but only with the heads cut off first). I just handfeed mine so that's no problem.
