Misting of Veiled Chameleons?

ridge Oct 26, 2003 08:10 PM

I have been looking back through the posts but haven't found quite the answer I was looking for. Is it recommended to mist veiled chameleons? And if so how often? The breeder that I bought mine from said that you should never mist them but I am concerned about dehydration.

veiled chameleons should be misted..... BUT NOT COLD WATER!!!

warm water will not frighten them nearly as much.... some actually take a liking to it

misting is necessary if u live in dry arid areas . aka california.....

also misting allows them to drink droplets which acclumulate on leaves.

is that a water bowl i see in that picture.... i hope you have a dripper to provide for your veiled.

I mist my veiled frequently. I dont mist RIGHT on top of her but enough spritz to get on her--Sometimes she moves away from it, so i stop. Sometimes she stays there and seems to enjoy it so i keep doing it. Sometimes she goes directly under it and sips droplets collecting.

I have recently installed a drip bucket and have seen her go under it. I would definately provide some source of moving water unless you have one of those mysterious 'bowl-trained' chams.

I don't know if the breeder gave you good advice about never misting them. He might have meant don't mist them directly. My cages have an auto mister setup from Wetworks (Mr. Moisture). Getting it setup will take a week or so since the thing tends to fall apart for first time setups. But its working like a champ now. If a misting system is too much you might want to go with a dripper. Problem with a dripper is that you will need a collection bucket. with a mister, everything eventually evaporates and you can control how long you want to mist for. hope this helps.

Thanks - I am going to mist them (with warm water), I do have a drip system set up which is a cup full of ice with holes in it that drips into a potted plant below. I am going to have to revise that system eventually but since I don't see the chameleons drinking I will mist them even if they do give me evil looks for it.

Did you say "them"? You do know once they turn 3-4 months old they need to go in separate homes. how old are they?

There are two of "them", and if what the breeder told me was accurate, they are about 11 weeks old now, and 1.1 Should I watch for some behavior that would indicate the need to seperate them? As of now they seem to get along great.

at 11 weeks it's still ok to have them together. I'd have a second cage ready though and yes I would watch for agressiveness. They could be fine up to 6 months together or they could start fighting tomarrow. I admit I kept mine together untill they were 6 months (never had the time to build a cage) and they were fine. so just keep an eye on them.

I was also told by my breeder that they don't need/shouldn't be misted. Mine are both bowl drinkers. It was easy to train them too. Just place an ice cube on top of the cage in the morning and let it drip into the cup at the bottom. The breeder said that veilds don't need humidity like the panthers, etc. If fact she strongly advised against misting.
