mealworm sizes

yodaky Oct 26, 2003 10:08 PM

the last time i bought mealworms i was asked if i wanted large or small. i took the small and i am thinking of getting the large this next time. my question is, are the larger ones "closer" to turning into beetles? I mean, that would make sense to me but i figure it was worth asking just in case thanx.

you are correct. It will take far less time for a large (full grown) mealworm to turn into an alien, when compared to a small (baby) mealworm. One thing I have found is that if you start with the small sized mealworms, it isn’t too hard to get them to grow fast. If you provide them with a good dry and moist food on a daily basis, they can reach full size in a few weeks or less.

is there a chance that they may be talking about regular mealworms vs. superworms??? Everytime i asked for mealworms at the local petstore they said they only had large ones. They turned out to be superworms not the regular mealworms.

Just wondering

what's the difference between mealworms and waxworms? i would really like to breed either one so i could supply them to my leos whenever, but i dont know how. anyone have any suggestions? who's done it before? what works for you? any info would be great.

yes and no. I have had some very small mealies turn into aliens.

I'm thinking along Red's lines. I've had the same experience, where stores are calling superworms mealies. You need to be careful to match the food items you buy to the size of your leo.

my goal was to maybe get some larger mealworms since my leo has grown some what. the "small" worms i had gotten ranged in size from about a half inch to three quarters of an inch on the large end of the spectrum and on the small in they tended to be about a quarter of an inch. i just noticed in the last few days that i have been running low i have been putting more and more of the smaller worms in there to "make up" for the size. well, any way thanx for the info.
