Brittany, Texas ratsnakes are great to observe, but are reknowned for their short tempers. Their care is similar to that of cornsnakes, and there are several color morphs (most notably the leucistic morph).
Texas ratsnakes are tameable through frequent, gentle handling, and some are calm initially, but many simply do not follow those rules.
Thge scientific genera is Elaphe(or try Pantherophis). the species is obsoleta and the subspecies is linheimeri.
Do a Google search for Elaphe obsoleta lindheimeri. There is a lot of info on the internet.

I have found the captive bred to be no different than other North American rat snakes. I have several that have NEVER attempted to bite. Beware though their feeding response is better than many North American rat snakes. We have even caught wild and adult 5' TX rat that was reliable. That is he would reliably bite after 5 or 6 minutes of handling LOL. He did not strike though, just turned and deliberately bit as if to say let go leave me alone. I found that easier to deal with frankly.

Mine is just as calm and easy to handle as my other ratsnakes, including my corns. When I got her as a hatchling a year ago, she was a bit feisty, but she settled down quickly. A good friend of mine has lots of Texas Rats, and almost all of his are very easy to handle. That's where I got mine. He was at the show on Saturday, and you probably saw some of his. He had mostly this year's hatchlings: normal, flame, and leucistic. If you can't wait until next month's show, I can put you in touch with him. Duffy

I don't have his business card on me right now so I don't remember his name, but he did have an accent, he had some beautiful snakes. Is this the guy you know?
thanks

Yes, that's him. I will email you some info if you want, or have him give you a call. Or I can email him and have him link up with you via this forum. He did have some nice Texas Rats on Saturday, didn't he? Duffy
