fighting or playing??

pengocha Oct 27, 2003 10:20 AM

ok, this is my situation: about a year and a half ago i bought me a beardie (female). she was always very active. the last couple of months she was always hiding in her cave, she only came out when i took the cave away from here or when she was hungry. her eating habits are normal. so, to be save, we took her to a vet. he didn't find anything wrong with her but said to me that maybe she was lonely. so i did some research in the neighbourhood and i found a petshop that had a male beardie at the age of 8 months so i bought the male beardie. the first day that i've put the two of them together they acted calm (i've changed the terrarium, replaced rocks..). the female crawled back in her cave after 45min orso. the next day however i took the cave away from the female around 16h00. then it started, they both go around and around in cirkels, the male attacks(?) the female but doesn't go all the way it seems (like 2 dogs playing). they both put their beards up but it doesn't stay up. the male bobs his head and the female waves (witch she hasn't done for about half a year now. is this normal behaviour or should i worry?? greetz to all.

That was not such a bright suggestion by your vet at all. If anything you should have bought another female to live with your female. Male Female = lots of babies. That male is trying to breed your female, and with her actions of late hiding and only coming out for some food or water sounds to me like a slight brumation period which is natural, and is the time of year for it. Did your vet do a fecal examination to rule out parasites on the female? Your going to have to split them if you really don't want harm done to your female. The majority of the time males and females are kept separate, and only introduced for breeding purposes. Males can seriously dominate a female into submission take all the food, take the basking spots, and nip at her in passing just to show he is boss. That head bobbing and circling is a breeding behavior. Did your vet say anything about keeping this new dragon separate until you find out if it's healthy or not carrying illness or parasites? Just in putting those two in the same tank you may have caused your female to come into contact with parasites, bacteria, fungus, and disease. You really need to separate the two before you have lots of problems on your hands.

to add to what mattman said...if you vet didnt recognize brumation and diagnosed 'lonliness', suggesting you buy a second beardie and keep them together, your vet probably doesnt know much about beardies. id suggest you do more research on your own so that you know when your vet is just plain wrong, and look for a new one.
