Leopard keeper with a crested question...

leogurl May 29, 2003 02:49 PM

Why does there appear to be soooo many males and not many female cresteds available.
Those who are breeding have you figured out if temp. sexing is an option with these guys or is it something else.
I'm want to start with a pair of young animals to experience and gain knowledge with their husbandry but from everyone I talk to they won't confirm sex until ~9mths.
So it sounds like if I buy a young pair I just need to be aware they very well will be 2 males which will need seperate housing, right.
Thanks in advance to those who respond.

Temperature doesn't seem to be a factor in determining sex in Crested Gecko's. From the babies that I have hatched, the ratio of males is much higher than females (maybe 2 or 3 to 1. If you want a pair and only want to buy two animals, then I would recomend that you spend the extra money and buy a sexed pair (atleast 6 months of age, possibly older).

I think I am leaning towards buying a sexed female who is 6 - 9 months old and then buying a younger unsexed animal taking a gamble that it will be a male. Heck if it turns out to be a female then it's just a bonus since it looks like there are a lot of males to choose from.
Ok off to search for a girlie!
Thanks
