Uro Snot?

UroRookie Oct 27, 2003 11:19 AM

I am new to the whole Uromastyx seen, but I am not new to keeping reptiles. My Male Mali has been having what appears to be dried snot around his nostrils. I am wondering if anyone out there has had this problem or knows what it is or even has any suggestions for me.

I visited Deer Fern Farms this weekend and asked Doug that exact same question. He said that it is dried salt. In order for a Uro to conserve water, their bodies take salt out of their blood and the salt is excreted from their nostrils. It's completely normal and should rub off. Normally we don't see the salt build up because the uro will rub it off. But occasionally we will see it start to build up. Nothing to worry about.

Uromastyx don't sweat. To expel extra minerals and moisture, it comes out of their nose. Kind of looks like crusty salt boogers. That is how our male Mali got his name: The Booger. (Yes his name does have a "the" in front of it, because he is THE Booger).

How old is your Mali? Was it big when you got it? Good luck with your lizards!

I am appreciate the info and I am releived to hear it. Both my Mali's are full grown, the male more so than the female (I think she has some filling out yet to do). I just recently got them and took a risk getting the older ones, not knowing much about there background at all, that is why I get so worried about anything out of the ordinary, but besides this they are doing great and I am really enjoying keeping them.
