Heat bulb wattage

lizard-lady Oct 27, 2003 01:59 PM

Hello. I would like to know what wattage heat bulb to use for my juvie Uro. I am setting up the cage;which is a 3'Vision with the basking well and a ceramic fixture. I'm getting the Uro from Doug Dix and he said just a cheap flood light would do. But I forgot to ask him what wattage. I don't want to cook my little Uro. I know I asked about the bulb before and it was sujested I use mercury vapor but that would be too hot.

I have 2 uros from Doug and I have recently visited his farm. It's spectacular! Since he uses the vision cages - I don't - it would be best to ask him what wattage he uses. The best time to call him is before 9 am or after 7 pm. His phone number is on his website on his ordering page. If you email him he's a very busy guy and it could take a week or so to get a response. He has always encouraged me to phone him... Good luck.

Or if you don't want to call or email him, you could just try a few different wattages and see which one gets you the basking temp you are looking for. My guess is that he uses a 100 watt or even a 160 watt to get the high temps.

I use the 160 watt mercury heat lamp, and they love it! However, my cage is not a vision, and is more open. It's always a good idea to have different wattage bulbs on hand, so I would go buy a 100 watt flood, 75 watt flood, if you can find anything higher I'd try it. Is he going to get UVB somewhere? If you are using the tubes then a regular spot light will work for the heat. You want the basking area up close to 120 - 125 F. They really love that!
Have a good time with your new guy!

Thank you for responding to my post. I called Doug last night and he said a 100watt bulb shoud do it. He also said to get a timer for the light and uv to be on for 12 hours.
