Reassure me

ecb Oct 27, 2003 02:18 PM

Here in eastern Pa, it has gotten COLD
my house is pretty warm, but it does get cooler in the night, and has drafts all winter long (an old house, need replacement windows, etc)
Smo'ore has taken to cruising in the early evenings into the night (till a little after 11) but she has turned down the last 2 feedings offered, last night it was 3 rat pinks, and last week it was a very small rat, the size of a full grown mouse(Unfortunatly my younger daughter wants to keep the one rat as a pet)
it is winter, she is female, and the temps in her tank are still good (My daughter checkes every other day with the temp gun) and the snake does move from side to side

She is just not eating
this is to be expected, yes?
She will eat when she gets hungry enough, yes?
Just making sure, thanks in advance for your time and patience

Beth,
It is probably the weather change. It is 85 degrees in beautiful Palm Beach today. Send her down and I will take care of her for the winter. I make sure she writes often.

Hi Elizabeth -

My advice is predicated on your snake being an adult.

First of all, encourage your daughter’s interest in rats, but insist that she keep not one, but two, as pets, one of each sex. And tell her not to get attached to their offspring, which you will begin to stockpile in your freezer. By next spring, you will have a goodly supply ready when your python’s appetite reappears.

The snake is fine, at this point it is my poor frantic (now mommy syndrome) Daughter I M worried about
she is SURE the snake is hungry (it moves around at night, I M telling her that if the snake were hungry, the snake would EAT the food we put in front of it.
This is gonna be a LONG winter, I may have to move the snake out of the bedroom so it is not so obvious when it moves around
*and yes, we are still offering food every 5 days or so (I would like to move it back to every 10, but ASK will not hear of it)
Wish me luck with this little lady

It's cold in RI too, well sort of, and I don't want to turn on my heat but I wanted my pets to be warm. My house is old too with rattley drafty windows. I used window shrink wrap on the whole apartment and I have a space blanket duct taped over the window closest to the big snake cage. I can get it about 3 degrees warmer in that room than the rest of the house and I can keep the house in the 70's when it is 35 outside. Also I have foil and thin polystyrene on three walls of each snake cage, which I did awhile ago, and that seemed to help quite a bit. I hope some of these ideas might be helpful.
