On a side note: California is ON FIRE and San Diego is burning as we speak........

Fred Albury Oct 27, 2003 02:21 PM

I KNOW this isnt the most Drymarchon related post, but it is not a political one. San Diego Calif is surrounded on three sides by flame, roughly 200 homes have been destroyed, the amount of sheer land that has been destroyed is approximtely the area of Chicago.
These fires in San Diego are being fueled by 94-100 degree temps and SANTA-ANA winds driving from North to south gusting at 35 mph. In inner-city areas, ASH is comeing down like snow, and the air quality is measured at 90ppm, which is considered VERY VERY BAD.
Huge amounts of people have lost their homes, been displaced and had to take what few possesions they could take and take what few animals they can. The winds change the direction of this fire hourly, which make it pretty much un-containable.
The mayor has asked that employeers not send their employees to work today(Ignored because of greed) and that we dont use much electricty or water as both are at a premium right now. The President is expected to formally call San Diego, California a National disaster area. Trust me...it is. Hasnt been devastation like this here since 1972, and that was TINY compared to this one. The amount of habitat that contains a wide variety of rare reptiles and birds and mammals is being destroyed rapidly. Prayers for the residents of this city that have lost their homes and for firefighters, police and volunteers here are needed. Take care.

Sincerely,

How close to you live to the fires, Fred? Is your home safe?

Fred Albury Oct 27, 2003 02:51 PM

ALL high schools, elementary schools, and Colleges have been CLOSED until further notice..

All City and county employees that are not vital to fire suppresion have been asked not to come to work today.

Two of the major freeways here have been CLOSED,there is almost no traffic on the freeways.

The mayor has asked business to CLOSE today to limit freeway traffic for emergency vehciles. He has also asked residents of San Diego to cut back on their use of water and electricty.Electricity lines are down, creating more havoc.

MY place is not threatened at the current time, but the fear is that the fires will join together to make one big fire. This is a VERY real possibility and would make this fire a truly risky proposition for even inner city residents. I have had three friends that had to evacuate, one of which I helped do so. Not fun. Lots of snakes to move. And a few pigs. And cats. And LOTS of pictures.

Take care,

Fred Albury

I'm a little confused. Is San Diego "surrounded" by flames, or are the flames "in" San Diego? If I were you, I'd be packing instead of posting. Good luck Fred! Keep us posted.

The City of San Diego is surrounded on three sides by fire. The fear is that several of the fires will connect and then sweep Westward, consumeing a lot of the suburbs and city. The Santa-Ana winds move wherever they want, carrying the fire with them. Thanks for the kind thoughts,I will be fine. Am going down to Red Cross to volunteer to help evacuations. its HECTIC here.

Take care,

Fred

I wish a disaster like this didn't have to happen, but it supports my points in previous posts.

Good luck to everyone in those fire areas.

Here's a URL to some of the global warming issues I talked about earlier and how huge numbers scientists think it is a fraud.

and heres one about good logging that prevents devestating fires like the one California is experiencing yet again--thanks to many of the environmental groups!

Just reporting something happening, not looking for bigger causes of why by tieing them into other issues. Lets NOT turn this into a political vehicle for our views on the enviornment please.

Thanks,

When Fred started that huge flame war on the Boa forum about the war in Iraq, he expressed an intense hatred for Bush.
