perlite...vermiculite...?

chipstahoy Oct 27, 2003 03:30 PM

what is it? i've read up on the internet about what to put in the moist hide box, and most people recommend this stuff. where would i get it? i have moist paper towel in mine, but that seems to go dry pretty fast, and i would like it to stay moist longer. but if i kept the paper towel in mine, how often should i change it? it seems to go brown pretty quickly...any suggestions? thanks

Perlite is a volcanic glass. It's the little white thingies you see in potting soil. I don't think it's a good idea to use it for your humid hide. It's more for keeping your eggs in.

Vermiculite or sphagnum peat moss is better for the humid hide. They retain moisture pretty well, plus my leos enjoy it more than the paper towels. You can buy them at any garden store. Home Depot sells big bags for $3.

i have some sphagnum moss that this guy got for me for my salamander tank, and i have a lot left over. is that good to use? we're talking about the light brown/colorless looking stuff here? i have a ton i could use...but mine was wild picked. is it a good idea to use it still? thanks
