Dehydration

littleadsmom Oct 27, 2003 03:50 PM

Have read a couple of posts about a water/salt/sugar soak for Uros that are dehydrated. Anybody got a "recipe"? and how hot for the water? Warm to touch, or HOT to touch? My poor litte guy has eaten a bit of food (greens and carrots) and seems alert but he looks sooooo skinny. See picture on the photo section, his name is Blue.

Thanks so much!

L.

for dehydration iwould just soak him one time in water that is warm to almost hot to our touch, but not too hot that you can't take it. This shoudl be about right if you understand what i am getting at. Make sure you blow dry his tail, to prevent tail rot also. I wouldn't add anything to it really. Too much salt cannot be too good, and i so not believe that uros should really have alot of sugar either...maybe i am wrong though, just my thoughts. This should give him the hydration he needs. Also make sure his greens are moist everyday.
Good luck, he is nice looking.

from what i have HEARD, i have never first hand seen it, it involves the scales/spikes on their tails missing. there is no cure. I also believe the spikes in stead of being normal color are white instead. Rico has two scales missing on his tail from being a WC says doug dix, so if they had tail rot, it isnt a big deal i guess, i do not know what happened to rico doug says probably from the trap. Poor Rico!
Good luck

you can read about soaking animals at our site, in the FAQ, but any water you use should be tepid, that is, room temperature. using "warm" or "hot" water, especially without an actual temperature reference, is dangerous to the health of any cold blooded animal. they are not "basking" while they are soaking, they are hydrating, using even "warm" water risks overheating, and killing, your animal.

I have other info from a very reputable breeder - Doug at Deer Fern Farms.

The normal body temperature for a uro is around 105 degrees. Soaking them in anything cooler than 95 will drastically lower their body temperature. That's not a good thing especially if the uro has a weakend ammune system and should be kept warm. The water should be on the hotter end of warm, but not hot enough to steam. It should feel like really warm bath water.

I always bathe my uros in 100 degree water - per Doug Dix. They love it. Once, by mistake, I had the water too cool (I also have beardies and they like the water a little cooler) and my uro almost jumped out. It was like he was saying "It's too cold!"

Hope this helps. I trust all the info I get from Doug Dix. He has been working with herps for many years and really understands their needs. If you would like to verify this info, visit Doug's site at www.deerfernfarms.com and look at his care sheet.
