A pretty cool escape story - 2 years later!!!

powergeckos Oct 27, 2003 04:14 PM

I have a great friend - John Meltzer of RJ Reptiles, who had a baby leo get out and escape in his herp room - which happens to be a very large area, so finding it would be nearly impossible. Sadly, John could not find her.

This was 2 years ago. Every now and then (if I remember the story) John would see this tremendously bright, fat and ultra-quick leopard gecko running around the basement, ducking under the countles stacks of racks in his herp area. John was amazed at how bright and QUICK she was.

Well, one day, he actually caught her. And this is a picture. . . . .

Remember, this leo had no immediate source of fresh water (that we know of) and the only food would be the bugs that escaped from his other herps. He actually has thrived in this environment.

Pretty cool story huh. . . .

(Oh, and don't give me crap about sand . . . LOL)

I think that shows just how hardy these amazing creatures are. Obviously we like to keep them in what we consider optimal temp gradient, best food available, fresh water, and many hides. Maybe we do stress over thme just a tad to much, but then again what good parent doesn't. I remember you telling that story before. I believe to someone who had an escapee, only it wasn't caught yet(if memory serves). Glad it's safe now.

Actually, I had lots of chances to catch her but enjoyed having her loose. BTW, right after you left, the new "escapee" came out! Take care. John

. . . I will attempt to answer (John, you can chime in too).

When I saw her today, she was jumpy - definitely didn't want to be handled, but didn't try to bolt out of the box or anything.

Just a cool, cool deal and a great story.

At petco, we have a white spot gecko that got out as a baby, and has been in the back room for two years as well. I swear, it is HUGE... at least 9 or 10 inches long, and prolly 3 inches wide. But he is lightning fast. Maybe we'll catch him some day!
