Age of Petco Leos?

MickeyMac Oct 27, 2003 04:49 PM

Does anyone know the approximate age of baby leo's from Petco? I just found this board recently...had I found it sooner I would have purchased my first leo(1st herp ever) from a better source, but he/she seems to be doing fine three weeks later. Anyway, the fine folks at my local Petco had no idea how old the leo's were, so I thought someone here might have a general idea.

Thanks

Most Petcos get their leos right out of the egg. They keep them until they sell for the most part. My local Petco seems to sell them from hatchlings to about 8 weeks.

Good luck with the little one! There are a lot of knowledgeable people on the boards here, and you've found a great resource.

WAY too young. Probably around 4 weeks. I work there, so I would know. Don't get a leo from petco. They have coccidia. It sucks.

Is this just Petco in your area or all over the country? I got my little guy in PA. He appears healthy to me, but this is my first reptile so I'm not familiar with any warning signs. What should I look out for? Like I said he seems healthy...he's eating, drinking and pooping regulary and he's just finishing his second shed in two weeks. My temps are 88 and 80 during the day and 84 and 76 at night. He's been readily pouncing on crickets (he likes to climb on top of his hide and strike from above..it's pretty comical to watch) I also offer mealworms which he watches and licks, but doesn't eat. He did eat them for a few days until I offered crickets.
Any help anyone can offer would be appreciated.
Thanks

I M near Philly, and there is a GREAT herp Vet in the northeast Philly area
TRUST me, if you got the gecko from Petco, it needs to be checked for Parasites, and this guy is good about it (only charged me $4 for a Full Oz of Pancure to treat 2 animals, the guy on Bethlehem pike charged me 30 for a single treatment dose, and never did get a stool spec)
Good luck, and welcome to the forum

Bill Brant from Gormet Rodent, who supplies half the PetCos with their Leo babies. He generally sends them out at 2 weeks, but during special sale periods where the demand is up, yes, he will send them out at a week old. I've never had one arrive at the store with a raw umbilical area, so no, I've never received one straight from the egg. We have never had a problem with disease in the babies we've received in them. Although, due to the stress of having several in a cage or due to the crickets we feed them, by the time they are juvies we may develop worms which need to be treated. We have 3-4 cages dedicated to Leos at any one time. Due to their growth rates, we will never have Leos of different sizes together. We even resize babies as they grow, since the dominant ones grow much faster than others. I feel bad for those PetCos that are receiving sick Leos, I have to wonder who is sending them their Leos. They need to stop using that supplier.

I just received a shipment of leos at the store where I work, the health certificate that came with them said they were 5 days old. Gourmet Rodent called me today and wanted my opinion on the shipement. I told them that I wasn't happy that the babies came in so young.

So far at my store the only problems I have seen with the leos is some that suffered because of the high density they were keeping them at. Since I took over the reptiles and fish, I separated the leopard gecko babies. They are now housed in two spearate enclosures, with the smaller guys in one and the little larger guys in another.
