PLEASE HELP! MY 1 YEAR OLD MALE BEARDIE SOUNDS CONGESTED! WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Jason_Couch May 29, 2003 03:21 PM

Well to start off with thank you for taking the time to look. He is about 1 year old and has been doing great, he still eats a lot. Just today I noticed a weasing sound when he fully exhales, he doesn't make the sound every time he breathes but he does it fairly frequently. I already raised the temp in his cage and was curous what else I can do for him. He is on sand and his temps were: 105 basking and 80-85 cool side. I raised the basking temp to 110-115 F. Any advice will be appreciated greatly. I am worried about him.

Thank you and have a great day!

It sounds like there is a possibility he could have a respiratory infection, in which case he would need to see a vet for antibiotics. My advise would be to see if you can get in before the weekend.

that he does not have nose plugs(dead shed skin) and that is what is make the weezing, if those are clear, you need to get him to a vet ASAP, respiratory infections in reptiles are very serious and life threatening

He eather has res. infection or mouth rot, check his mouth, if his mouths SMELLS and it seems the is a chessey substance in their its mouth rot, also check him nostrals and see if they are crusty around and inside the nostrals. if you see any of these systems you NEED to get him to a vet, I would def. bring him anways, it sounds like he has a res. infection. I hope every thing turns out ok!

Check your humidity as well, if it is to humid that could be the cause of the infection causing the weezing.

I am also assuming the dragon isn't hissing with mouth open and beard extended. Is he weezing with mouth closed or open?

Well He doesn't show any of the symptoms you guys said to look for; stuff in his mouth, no dead skin in nostrils, no mucus of any kind around the nose, no bad breath. When he made the noise before I didn't see him do it, I heard and looked over and his mouth was partially open. I noticed that when he would make the noise he would lick like he was swallowing after, so I assume it is the start of a respritory infection. I am now treating him with Vibramycin (doxycyclin monohydrate) rasberry flavored. He drank it well yesterday and I will treat him for 30 days. Does that sound like the right treatment, along with the raised temp to 115 in the basking spot and I also put him in a much larger cage, a 250 gallon for him and his 2 women? Thank you for the help I appreciate it greatly. Have a great day Everyone!
