Why do some Uromastyx acanthinurus get a crusty build up around their mouths?
did someone tell you its an acanthinurus thing or do your just have it? my mali had it and it was hyperkeritotic dermitisis (sp?) it hasnt really gone away fully but it peels off real easy when they shed
I keep many species of Uromastyx and have only encountered it on two adult Uromastyx acanthinurus. Is there any way to cure it? The built up 'stuff' around their mouths does not come off when they shed.
im not sure if it ever goes away fullymy mali's comes back every couple months it doesnt come off by its self you have to peel it and the best time is when their shedding in that area so you dont leave a sore, heres a copy of the reply i got when asked about it
""Doesn't sound like shedding, sounds more like Hyperkeratotic dermatitis.
I recently aquired a male acanthinurus with this problem.
I soaked him in warm water up to his mouth.. (to soften the crust)
then gently peeled and scraped away the crust. Then swabbed it with a dilute solution of
hydrogen peroxide. After all that, I took some Aloe Vera gel and mixed it with some triple
antibiotic and used a Q-tip to gently apply this to the effected area. I left this on for about 4 hours.
So far so good.. it hasn't come back.
If Hyperkeratotic dermatitis is what your lizard has, copy what I did and see if that
helps.""
oh YAY i am so happy to hear about others who have this problem! every time i talk to other uros about it they're like "it's mouth rot" NO NO NO it's not!!! Our adult male mali is the only one to have this problem. I have heard many theories as to what could cause it, anything from problems with shedding (which he certainly has) to calcium build ups. I've found that diet makes a big difference, but the biggest thing is neosporin. On a suggestion from I believe Lindsay Pike, we started applying a bit of neosporin to the area and it finally started to do some serious shrinking, and has now completely peeled off in places. It hasn't, in any way, hindered his health or appetite.
Thank-you very much for the help. What exactly is Neosporin, and where can I get it from?
Neosporin is a nice, mild, antibiotic gel/creme thing. It's the same stuff that's been advertised for years on tv as helping you to heal cuts faster or whatever. You can buy it ANYWHERE: wal-mart, grocery stores, walgreens, pretty much anywhere would sell this stuff. It comes in many different sizes of tubes, and just a little dab'll do ya. Best part is, you can use it on yourself, too, if you have a nasty cut that you want to heal up faster heh. I have also heard that it's good for treating body acne. Who knew?? Miraculous stuff, neosporin
