Waterland Tubs

Andrew_Myers Oct 27, 2003 09:26 PM

I've been thinking about getting a waterland tub but I was wondering... Is the water to land ration too large for a few 2 year old N.A. woods? They're all around 3-3.5 inches. What substrate would be best for the land portion (with cleanliness and convenience in mind)? I was also thinking about getting a zoomed 501 external filter. Is this a wise choice? Am I better off with some other model or a submersible? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The zoo med is a huge waste of money. If you must use a submersible get a fluval 4 plus. But if you can get a pond filter or a hang on tank on those it'd be way better. All my woodies make huge poops and foul large water container very quickly.

A waterland tub is going to be too small for two woodies in about two years when they grow up. The waterland is good though because it has the slope which is very important for woodies which have been known to drown each other during courtship, mating and their violent conflicts.

I'd probably only use it this winter and maybe next. Then I plan on hibernating them. I think by then my spotties will be just the right size for it . But do you think there would be enough land for them? What size are yours and how do you house them? Also, can you recomend a specific pond filter? Thanks a lot

the adults are all in an outdoor pen....back east don't get to see them much this year...its got three cement mixing tubs and a small pond in it, the land area is about 200 sq feet...but there are eight of them.

the subadults...four of them...are here with me in and indoor pen made from a 200 gallon pond (about 6 feet by three feet) and a large display case of almost equal dimensions. I just connected them and built a wall of wood around the resulting (weird) shape...one of these days i will take some pics.

pondmaster and laguna make a bunch of similar products get something with alarge turn over but with some control over the output (so they don't get blown away}

they spend lots of time in the water so althoug i think the waterlands really don't have enough land they will be fine in one for a year.

I agree with Rob... At first I considered the Waterland Tub for Anouk but at the time, they had only produced the smaller variety which I didn't feel was big enough. Now the larger one is out but Anouk is now nearly 6". A 3-4" as you describe Andrew, the Waterland tub would work for 1 or 2 years max, but I find that these guys, even the subs enjoy tooling around on land after 3".

If you are shooting for an easy indoor option, I think the WL tub is not a bad option temporarily, but if you have land to spare, 80/20 (land/water) or 90/10 would work better. I plan to go with a small pond setup (perhaps a premade or cement) next season for 1.2 animals (6-9" with at least 100 sq feet of total space for them to roam, forage and hide.
