Halogen Lights? Zoomed or Home Depot Brand?

JonV Oct 27, 2003 10:03 PM

Anybody have any input on if the expensive Halogens offered by Zoomed etc... are better than the stuff you get at Home Depot? Thanks,
Jon

To quote Melissa Kaplan;

"Fortunately, providing ultraviolet A is quite simple: any household incandescent light bulb
provides some along with providing visible light and heat. Ultraviolet B-producing fluorescent tubes
also provide UVA.
There are light bulbs made specifically to provide captive reptiles with heat and visible
light. They are more expensive than household incandescent bulbs despite not doing much more
for the reptiles than do household incandescents."

So while it would seem to be beneficial to your tegu to provide him with a whitebasking lamp, it really doesnt and more can be gained from providing him with basking heat from a red or "black" bulb that puts off heat and can remain on 24 hours. Combined with a flouresent UVB light in about the 5.0 spectrum. I also use a heating pad, but I have a 175gallon reptarium that is open air, so I constantly battle the enclosures heat with the houses heat.

Hope that helped

Thanks Tegulizards, that really did help. I have a 4' fluorescent, so I'll probably just get the cheaper bulbs from Home Depot from now on. On the other hand, I do like that blue glow that the neodynium coated bulbs from ExoTerra give off. They make things look more jungly, if that's even a word, which I doubt it is.
