Do king snakes always musk?

debeneezer Oct 27, 2003 10:18 PM

I am thinking about getting a king or milk snake, but I smelled a king snake at the pet store and it was stinky. Someone told me that was musking. Do they only do that when they are afraid, or do they do that often? I have a couple of corn snakes and they have never done that.

They only musk when they are afraid and (most) eventually stop even doing that once they get comfortable. It also may have just been a dirty cage.

The only one I have that does this on a regular basis is my female Cal King. She will musk everytime she is handled Never tries to bite but she sure can stink up the place! LOL! After we get her out and handle her a bit she quits, I think it just depends on the snake.

We have 2 Florida Kings, wild caught, & neither of them have ever musked. Not even when we found them. My brother in law has a Cal King that does however. Maybe a nasty cage at the pet shop?
