How much orange is needed to be a carrot tail?

RedQuake Oct 27, 2003 11:18 PM

I'm just wondering how far down the tail the orange has to be in order for it to be a true carrot tail???

Dot just shed yesterday and when i was feeding her last night i saw how much she more orange she has developed on her tail. Its about a 1/4 of the way down from the base and all the way around it. I REALLY need to get more pics posted!!!!!!

Thanks for the input

It's not really the amount of orange but the type. True Carrottails, from my experience, do not have black spots in their carrot unless the black spots occur in a whitish area.

examples:

they could have very little (see how the faded black spots are in whitish areas?:

These two have more carrot - the one on the left has a couple of white patches, where black spots had been, I am hoping they will fill in with carrot eventually:

This is not a carrottail (although one of her parents is):

Hope this helps some.

That helps alot. I'll have to check that on Dot, but i'm still hoping that she is a carrot tail

Your pics are great by the way

I have seen one of the top breeders in this country lable carrot tails as far down as 5% carrot tails. Being that there are no set standards on leopard geckos anything anyone says on the matter is very subjectional. The original carrot tails from the Ray Hine line were unmistakably carrot tails. Most them were also super hypos. I have seen hypo and super hypo carrot tails and have produced many of them. Also I have produced carrot tail crosses that do have melanin mixed in with some of the carrot. Thats the beauty of leopard geckos. They are so diverse that its hard to lump some of them with any of the "FRU FRU " morphs out there. I am enclosing a picture of what I would call a "classic" carrot tail. Her coloration is yellow and stands in contrast to her tail color. Hope this helps.

just post some pics of her and see what everyone thinks.

I'm currently going mad trying to organize this space of mine to accomidate the furniture i have plus my gecko unit. I gave away my entertainment unit in the hopes of aquiring more room but to no avail. Thats my main goal for the next few weeks. Plus my computer is acting up, wouldn't boot this morning. It took me 20min just to get it to, then get online. I fear i'll lose the system soon. If you don't see me post for a while, that will be why LOL

I'll try to get some pics up soon in case my computer blows up hehehe

P.S. heres the old one of her.........theres black and orange together but i think the black has faded. Its hard to tell cause she's doing alot of hiding and won't come out with any lights on.

with one so young. Post pics of her when she is at least 20 grams, the orange in her tail will continue (or not) to come in for some time. Carrottails are hatched w/o the caorrot on their tails, they start developing it within the first couple of weeks and it goes from there.

It seems like there could be a couple flakes of carrot to sell it as a carrot Anything for some people to make an extra buck in this hobby!

You can never have just one gecko. Actually it is almost impossible to have two

From what i've read, yes thats true. But i don't have any plans on selling Dot. I don't even think i'll be able to part with any of the babies i get....especially the first set.

Its just that i keep seeing the most amazing geckos with bright orange tails and its exciting to think i might have one too.

Just so no one yells at me....... i love all my geckos, orange tails or not.
