DB Terrapin Breeding Info?

MiserMike Oct 28, 2003 06:01 AM

I have 2.2 Diamondback Terrapins, a pair of three year olds and a pair of 2 years olds. After coming indoors after spending the summer outside (WI), both males are trying to breed the females, who don't seem resistant to the idea, but I'm not sure if successful copulation has occurred yet. I'd appreciate any tips on 1)what I can do to encourage successful breeding: do they need to be temperature or photoperiod cycled? 2)how long after copulation might eggs be laid? 3)what is a minimum requirement for a sand/soil box? (space is limited) and 4)how long/what temperature should eggs be incubated? I've bred and raised snakes before, but never turtles. Thanks for any info! (I have limited/intermittent access to this site, so I drop in and out irregularly.)

I have bred several different kinds of water turtles but this is my first year with terrapins of both sexes so i have no first hand experience with this species. But this place has at least 4 people who have done it many times and two who do it commercially:

you may want to direct your questions to Todd, Chun, Vickie or Jonathan.
