Tropic Aire Humidifier

NealH May 29, 2003 05:03 PM

Has anyone used the Tropic Aire humidifier in their frog tank? I have seen it for sale several places on the net, and was wondering if it actually sprays a mist, or if it just blows "humidified air" into the tank. Just looking for anyone with experience with it.
Thanks,
Neal

I have not used one, but have heard from a few people when I asked the same question, that they are crap, and don't work.

Hi,

yup, they are crap and don't work ..I used one for a few moonths...even with a higher output pump, mine barely put out any air....for a very tiny tank it could provide some freah air but for anything over a few gallons I can't see it would be of much help/use.

Like others said. They suck. I have posted a few times now on my reasons. To save you the time of searching the old server/archives, just take our word for it

Go with the Walgreens Fogger (Cool-mist) instead. It works 10,000,000x better/efficiently, is relatively cheap, and your friends and family will think it is the coolest thing.

Good luck,
Cliff

I looked at walgreen's site and saw a number of humidifiers, Do you mean the "Cool Mist Untrasonic Humidifier
with a 2.7 Gallon Output"? Do you get the "morning fog" affect with it? Thanks,

Yes, this is what I was referring to. Very nice to have in a tank. You will "sort of" get the morning fog look. This device really just fills the entire tank up with a thick fog. After the timer turns off the UH, the fog takes a while to fade away, so you will get the morning fog during this time period. I will post some pictures for you if you want to see how I have it setup. Let me know.

I'm really considering buying one, so some pics of your setup would be really helpful. Thanks in advance,

Ok, now that I have free time

The pictures really just show how I used PVC as the extentsion to the tank for the fog to move through. At the base of the PVC to the UH (main device) there is a 2" Rubber Stopper which you can get at any hardware store, and the PVC fits in perfectly.

You can use the PVC L-curves to redirect the PVC out of "eye-sore" sight, and that way it is all behind the setup. Once you curve the PVC around to go into the tank you will need a Protective Cap which you can get at the pet store as a Fish Filter (Whisper) cover. They come in Black, Grey, and Clear. Clear seems to look the best in my view.

Set a Digital timer to come on however often you would like to see it. I have mine set for 3 times a day (9am, 3pm, and 9pm) for 10 minutes, 4 minutes, and 10 minutes, respectively for my 30 gallon setup.

These pictures show how the Fog poors in at a fast speed. My frogs love to sit up on my waterfall right underneathe it when it turns on. It fills the tank up in about 1 minute of use and then just condenses after that. It will usually stay foggy in the tank for about 10 minutes following the timer turning off. The bottom-right picture is about 3 minutes after it turned off.

As you can see by my humidifier gauge, it stays > 90% at all times, and that is without misting the tank at all! The Brom stays filled with water and the moss stays perfectly healthy.

If you have any other technical questions, feel free to ask.

Well Cliff, you sold me on this one! I went to Walgreen's tonight and picked one up, I'll go get the rest of the materials tomorrow. What a great demonstration! Nice pics and good descriptions of the setup, you can't ask for anything better than that! I've been planning on getting a humidifier for a few weeks now, so I'm pretty exited about this so Thanks again!

hi there,
just have one question. does it have to be the ultrasonic cool mist or could it be any type of cool mist humifider. i have a duracraft coool mist humifider and was wondering if that would work. thanks alot.

Spar Jun 01, 2003 10:31 PM

I am assuming that yours is an External Unit. In that case, as long as it produces enough Mist to fill your tank up in a reasonable time period, then it should be fine. I dont like the Internal units because of the "potential" danger to the frogs.
