Do Crickets need UVB

Vargas Oct 28, 2003 03:37 PM

Hi,
I am raising crickets with Reptile Heat Lamps and keeping the temps about 90 degrees or so. Hope that's about right?
Anyway do crickets need UVB? (fluorescent bulb or UVB via a ZooMed PowerSun) or is a ZooMed basking bulb okay.
I have a reptile room running at 80 degrees ambient so even low watts kicks this up to 90 which is what I am rearing some pinheads at. Any help very appreciated.
Thanks Steve

No.. UVB is not needed for crickets.. The only reason UVB/UVA is needed in reptiles is for the absorption of D3 for the processing of Calcium. Insects aren't like that...

Not to mention.. Crickets are nocturnal anyway.... why would they need bright lights? Bright lights are detrimental to cricket health. Heat without light is better.

Glad you mentioned that it was mainly just for a quick heat source - I will switch to CHE's
